Chapter Eleven

We shoot some exciting scenes the next day. Brooklyn Bates is back on set, and Sadie and her friends are tracking down some leads to figure out who could be her long-lost twin sister. You’d think that would be easy to do, but the twins were separated at birth, with Brooklyn’s character leaving with the royal family, and her twin sister vanishing from the hospital.

In the latest scene, Cody, Aubrey, Brooklyn, and I stand on the busy street in Sadie’s town, trying to figure it out. Extras pass by us to make it look like it’s a bustling day downtown.

“The thing is,” I say to Brooklyn as Sadie, “because you weren’t identical twins, it’s not like we’ll recognize your sister. She could be hiding in plain sight.”

“Cut!” Monique the director shouts.

The extras scatter, and Monique steps toward us, smiling. “Great job, Hayley. I think we nailed it.”

“Great job, everyone,” Brooklyn gushes. “I’m so impressed with how talented you all are.”

I feel a little thrill. It’s not every day a mega movie star compliments your acting talent. It’s so cool that Brooklyn is so normal. She came to work with blueberry muffins for everyone. She squealed when she met Salmon. She’s also clumsy, showing us a Band-Aid on her elbow from when she banged it in the shower this morning.

“I wonder who Princess Stella’s sister is?” I ask, turning to Brooklyn. “Do you know?”

“Nope.” Brooklyn unclips her tiny microphone from inside her shirt. “Monique hasn’t given me the final pages.”

“She never gives them to us, either!” Aubrey cries. “She says it’s because she wants us to be genuinely surprised at the big reveal.”

“That’s smart,” Brooklyn remarks. “Do you guys have any theories?”

I look at some of the series regulars milling around. Caity Howe is here, who plays Sadie’s neighbor—maybe her? Or perhaps it’s Gilda, who works at Sadie and her friends’ favorite pizza shop? On the other hand, our last episode was all about the pizza shop, so maybe not.

Then I notice another woman pass by, her features arranged into a deep scowl. Wendy Bongiovanni, who plays Mrs. Stein, Sadie’s principal.

And also maybe the jewel thief? Did she grab those earrings and frame Vee because she was upset at how Vee did her makeup?

I nudge my friends, glancing in Wendy’s direction. The actress has stopped next to Monique and is speaking to her in a low voice about something. Monique answers, and then Wendy nods and heads toward her trailer.

“Which one of us is going to question her about Vee and the earrings?” I ask.

“I call dibs on Elizabeth,” Aubrey says quickly, naming the PA who’s the new makeup artist. “At least she’s friendly.”

Clem, the guy in craft services, is friendly too,” Cody argues. “I’ll take him.”

“Wait a minute!” I can’t believe it. “I didn’t volunteer to question Wendy!”

“You’re the best person for the job, Hayley,” Aubrey assures me. “And the bravest.”

“I’ll go with you,” says a voice. And here’s Amelia, sliding up to me with her lizard in tow. “We’ll question her together.
